Tips on Attending A Job Interview

When you receive an interview notice, kindly revert to the medium where the job advert was made to refresh your mind on several factors: when the advert was made, date of advert, source of advert, the position requirements (job and person requirements etc). I also advise that you look at your CV again and again so that you don’t provide information contrary to the one in the CV submitted. Again also research the Company that requires your services. These could be sources of questions at the interview.

There is that great need to look at possible areas where questions could emanate, possible areas of discussion, topics that could crop up – current affairs, trending issues, world view etc. This could be to test your communications skill, level of confidence, comportment etc.

You must understand that attending a job interview is not a firing squad – it is neither a death knell. Sometimes over-preparation could mere your chances, putting fear and jittery into you. You should be well comported; exude good confidence and also dress corporately and sensibly to job interview.

On day of interview, arrive at interview venue on time to avoid RUSH/ Confusion;

Knock before you enter the interview room.

Greet and wait to be offered a seat (show courtesy and decency).

Do not place your bag or wares on the interview table before the interviewers.

Do not be angry at the interviewer(s) even when they ask seeming irritating questions.

Do not be directly or indirectly insulting in your answers to questions- be polite.

Hammer more on your STRENGTH.

Do not attempt questions you do not know or understand.

Always put on smile while answering questions (it shows confidence and friendliness)

Effectively manage your words (do not be too economical with words nor evasive in your answers to questions)

Use words that are CLEAR and UNAMBIGUOUS to avoid misinterpretation.

Ask intelligent questions if given opportunity.  

It is important also to note that job candidate’s performance may be based on several factors: overall personal impact (mannerisms, poise, confidence, appearance); work experience in (if any) and suitability for position under consideration and knowledge of duties in the area of interest.
